Spectator Expectations at Tennis Matches
Individuals attending their first tennis match may be surprised to find that the sense of etiquette and sportsmanship that governs the game extends to spectators as well. There are a number of behaviors first time tennis fans should familiarize themselves with in order to avoid being seen as an inconsiderate, inexperienced spectator.
Generally speaking, silence is the name of the game during a tennis match. Cell phones should be set to silent mode and conversations should be held at a low volume and limited to periods between points and changeovers. As a player lines up to serve and a point begins, spectators should make no noise whatsoever. They most certainly should not cheer or groan midway through a live point.
While fans can and should applaud after a point, booing or jeering one player is not considered good form in the “sport of kings.” Similarly, cheering is not expected in a point that ends in a double fault or unforced error.
Noise is not the only form of distraction fans should avoid. Tennis is a sport that demands high levels of concentration over extended periods of time. With this in mind, spectators are expected to sit still in their seats and make no noticeable movements during points. In fact, spectators are typically not permitted to leave or access their seats until changeovers, which can sometimes be separated by 10 minutes or more.
Finally, flash photography is strongly discouraged and should never be used during live points, particularly during night matches.

Women’s Rights Intensifies
Omer Rains is an ecologist, philanthropist, and former state senator of California. In addition to his nonprofit work, Omer Rains has been recognized for his contribution to the progress of women’s rights.
Women’s rights has become a more polarizing topic in the last decade, with a growing debate over reproductive rights and gender identity. The historic Roe v. Wade case of 1973 came under scrutiny in July 2021, with both a spending bill being passed without the restrictions that access to abortion usually brings, and a number of U.S. governors asked to overturn Roe v. Wade the very next day. In the world of sports, names like Caster Semenya and Laurel Hubbard have been spoken of with motions to ban them from competing entirely due to above average testosterone levels, with the former athlete being barred from competing at the Tokyo Olympics.
The question of who has access to reproductive healthcare and who gets to call themselves female is being debated, although similar discussions about who gets to be called a male are notably absent from courts and competitions.

Gender Equality Laws
Former California Senator Omer Rains spent a significant part of his legislative career promoting policies and authoring legislation to end discrimination against minorities, especially women. The author of California's passage of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), Rains followed by authoring 68 bills instrumental in conforming the California codes to truly reflect the policies of the Equal Rights Amendment. The President of the National Women's Political Caucus stated that "Senator Omer Rains has done more to advance the cause of women's rights and equality under the law than any Legislator in California history."
While the ERA has yet to be adopted by the requisite number of states necessary to become part of the U.S. Constitution, many other acts were passed during the civil rights era to increase gender equality. Some of the most important legislative wins of that era include the following:
Equal Credit Opportunity Act: Passed in 1974, the ECOA ended the practice of denying women credit or loans without a male co-signer. The act also prohibits lender discrimination based on race, age, or income sources.
Equal Pay Act: As more women entered the workforce after World War II, employers deliberately offered them lower wages when they worked in the same positions as men. In 1963, President Kennedy updated the Fair Labor Standards Act to end this practice.

Pregnancy Discrimination Act: After this law was passed in 1978, employers have been barred from discriminating against pregnant women or women of child-bearing age in any aspect of employment. The act also allows women to use disability leave to take time off due to a pregnancy-related condition.
